クリス 「スペンサーってスポーツ好きだったよね？」
スペンサー「イエスッ！！」
クリス 「サッカーはする？」
スペンサー「ごくごくたま～にね。僕は何ていってもバスケ命だからね！」
クリス 「日本では休み時間や昼休みに、どれぐらいの子どもたちがサッカーをしてるのか、知ってるかい？」
スペンサー「そうだなあ。チャンスさえあれば、いつでも校庭でサッカーやっている子どもたちって数十人かそこらじゃないかと思うよ。でもなんでそんなこと聞くの？」
クリス 「この前クラスのみんなにサッカーに誘われたんだ。でも実は僕サッカーしたことなくて・・・アメリカではサッカーって学校でするスポーツじゃないよね？」
スペンサー「うん。確かに僕たちは小学校でサッカーしなかったね。ほとんどの学校の校庭はアスファルトだったからサッカーなんてしたらひどいケガをしてしまっただろうし、僕が小学生のときも中学生のときも高校生のときだって、サッカーが流行っていたっていう思い出はないな。そもそもアイダホでサッカーが流行ってたとは思えないよ。そもそもアイダホではサッカーって全然人気のないスポーツで、ロデオやカーリング以下なんだよ」
クリス 「それは、ちょっと大げさじゃない？」
スペンサー「オーケー。でも世界中でロデオとカーリングが大好きだって人はいないのは認めるよ。でも小学生の頃にサッカーが流行ってなかったっていうのは嘘じゃないよ。」
クリス 「うん。アメリカは世界でも数少ないサッカーが全然人気のない国なんだろうね」
スペンサー「でも日本の学校の子どもたちはサッカー大好きだよね！みんな学校が始まる前も、休み時間も、給食の時も、放課後もサッカーしているよ。彼らはちびっこ熱烈サッカー・ファンだね。子どもたちはよく同じグランドであっちでもこっちでもゲームをやっているから、特に自分も参加しているときだと、誰にタックルすれば・・・じゃなかった、誰のディフェンスにつけばいいのか、わからなくなってまぎらわしいんだよね」
クリス 「僕は子どもたちのドッジボールやキックボールや鬼ごっこに参加するのが好きだな。サッカーはどうしていいかわからなくなっちゃうからさ」
スペンサー「なんで？そんなにサッカー、下手なの？」
クリス 「言っとくけど、僕スポーツ得意じゃないんだよ。僕の下手っぴのせいでみんなのゲームを台無しにしちゃうんだよ」
スペンサー「わぁお～、そりゃあダメだね。クリス、小学生にすらかなわないんだ！！」
クリス 「うん、日本の子どもたちはスポーツに対してみんな真剣だからね」

【original conversation】
Chris: Hey Spencer-you like sports, right?
Spencer: Yes siree, I sure do!
Chris: Do you play soccer?
Spencer: On a very rare occasion, I'm more of a basketball guy myself.
Chris: Have you noticed how many kids play soccer here at recess and on lunch break?
Spencer: Yeah, I might have seen a few dozen or so kids playing soccer on the school grounds whenever they have the chance. Why do you ask?
Chris: The other day an entire class of kids invited me to play soccer, but the truth is I've never played soccer. It's not a sport we played at elementary school back home. Did you?
Spencer: We definitely didn't play soccer ay my elementary school. Most of the playground was asphalt so we would have gotten some killer injuries if we played soccer, plus I don't recall soccer being a popular sport in my elementary days...or middle school days...or even high school days. Actually, I don't think soccer is a popular sport in most regions of Idaho. In fact soccer might be one of the least popular sports in Idaho, behind rodeo and curling.
Chris: You're exaggerating a bit aren't you?
Spencer: OK. I admit nobody in the world really likes rodeo or curling, but I'm not lying about soccer being unpopular in my school days.
Chris: Yeah, I guess America is one of the few places in the world where soccer isn't very popular.
Spencer: But Japanese school children love it! They play soccer before school, during recess, during lunch, and even after school. They're little soccer maniacs. Oftentimes I see them playing multiple games on a single field, which gets very confusing, especially when I'm playing because I don't know who to tackle, um, I mean defend.
Chris: I'm happy to join the kids playing dodge ball, kickball, or tag, but as for soccer I'm kind of at a loss.
Spencer: Why's that? How bad can you suck at soccer?
Chris: Let me tell you, I'm not the best at sports, but I managed to ruin their soccer game all by myself with my sickness.
Spencer: Wow, that's pretty bad. You can't even hold your own against a bunch of elementary school students.
Chris: Dude, kids here are way serious about their sports.
